Trappers will pursue and catch tame vermin that's outside of a container. Many vermin animals are tameable and can be tamed at the kennel. But that's just an idea for next time (a bit late for this one) and does take more effort than just forgetting about them, or indeed setting them to be butchered from the off and only keeping non-grazers around until events take a turn towards a more conducive environment for the various herbivores. The no-grass (assumed no-soil, as well?) situation might well have been dealt with early on by breaching the caverns and (assuming you don't want to wander out into them as well, but just want to seed your non-cavern areas) wetting some sufficiently large floor area so that getting the grazer onto even the initially thin vegetation would keep them alive. Animals killed by hunters will be carried by the hunter to a Butcher's Shop, where a dwarf with the Butcher labor enabled will process the carcass into meat.

It's been a while since I've seriously tried hunting for food, but I think there's a distance thing (at least discouraging the job being taken up, if not outright preventing) with butchery of non-tame animals.Īnyhow, my answer would have been to build the cages in a handy location (if not already, e.g. You can butcher animals and livestock in Dwarf Fortress, but there are limitations on which animals you can butcher.
